Have you noticed that when you fall in love all your problems go away? One day your boss is a jerk, your car is useless, and your stressed out about being broke all the time. Then, you meet him or her. The one. Your very soul mate. And everything changes.
The next day your boss chews you out for no reason and you think, “Poor guy. He must be going through some rough times.” Your car gives up the ghost and you say to yourself, “That’s okay I’ve been meaning to get more exercise.” You even find out your bank account is overdrawn and you muse, “I’ve been meaning to fast for a while anyway. ” It’s true though, isn’t it? You fall in love and everything else changes.
And that’s the life of the spirit-filled born-again believer. They’ve met The One in Jesus. They get Him. They’ve come to a place in life where they begin to understand His love. How much He loves us, how much He’s done for us, what’s He’s planning for us. And you get it. This is what you’ve been looking for. He is what you’ve been looking for.
I don’t agree with Christians who say love is not a feeling, but a decision. It really is both. The Christian loves Jesus because they understand Him – His character, His sacrifice, His own love, and His promises. You can’t imagine a more loving, concerned, involved, caring person in your life. That breath you just took – a gift from Him. The heart beat that just coursed blood through your body – His doing. Did you know, He wants you to go to Heaven when you die? But He knew you couldn’t make it on your own. He knew you were literally doomed without Him. So the Son of God left His glory and His throne in a perfect Heaven to come down to a broken and battered world. Why? To save it. And to save you. That’s how much He loves you! A Savior like that is easy to love.
Yes, I know we can’t encounter Jesus with our five senses. (Well, I guess in rare occasions that is possible.) But nonetheless, believers experience Jesus everyday. And I know it’s hard to explain to someone who has never shared that experience. So I guess you’ll just have to believe me when I say experiencing Jesus is like feeling someone’s presence. You know how you can tell someone has walked into the room, yet you have not heard or seen anyone. It’s kind of like that. But it’s also like hearing your loved one’s voice when they first come home. There’s a joy, and a peace, and excitement, and deep love that comes upon you. It’s like hearing a new love song for the first time and being deeply moved. It’s like that.
Yes, I know it sounds weird, but it is spiritual right? It’s as spiritual as hearing your child’s first coo. It’s as spiritual as feeling a soft and unexpected kiss from your lover. It’s as spiritual as a star-filled night while camping. It’s like that. And the beauty of it all is it’s available to anyone who wants it. It as simple as acknowledging Him, even thanking Him; and going from there and moving into a genuine authentic connection with Him. Just focus on Him, and who is He, and what He’s done – for you! Yes you! Before you know it, you’ll love Him too.
